Katie Jo Kohls
Katie is the Director of Advertising Strategy at the Star Tribune. She cherishes the process of making ideas come to life and aligning advertisers with informative, entertaining content that resonates with readers.
She is also the Co-Director of Marketing and Communications for Ad 2 MN and the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the News Advertising Coalition.
Katie makes collaboration an art. Don’t be fooled by her reservation. She’s calculated, creative, analytical, and thorough. She demonstrates leadership through encouragement and resourceful empowerment. Katie is an active learner, setting goals of mindset — not recognition — and is a force multiplier in leveraging the strengths of her team and herself.
"My interactions and methods of engagement, while mindfully-tailored towards each individual within my team, are always centered on encouragement and empowerment. Acts of service and recognition are hugely impactful motivators.
I want to work with people that are like-VALUED, not like-minded. Honesty and work ethic are hardwired traits that are transcendent into any project, business or industry. It's when you combine that fabric with different perspectives and unique experience that your team thrives. And the results will back it up.
Be resourceful. Know your people − what they’re good at, what they’re passionate about, and build on those skills rather than trying to correct weakness. You can be a force multiplier when you connect your people with projects that are meaningful to them. Empower them with responsibility and encouragement, then watch the sparks fly."
"I aspire to be the best I can be at whatever I’m doing. Awards and key-performance-indicators can be so arbitrary when it comes to personal achievement. A goal of mine is to work on a team where everyone is passionate about what they are doing, waking up with the mindset of "let's get to it!" Again, this starts with aligning yourself with individuals that are alike in their values.
I love what I do. I want to keep on doing it bigger and better."
Book recommendation: How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie. Katie re-reads this every year, using a different pen color to annotate her reflections.
